In Resetting The Republic Brady breaks down how Ireland, one of the most prosperous economies in the world, feels far from that for people living there and he argues for radical reform of the country’s political and administrative structures.  

Brady is a writer and journalist. He was editor of The Irish Times (1986-2002). Since then, he's held several roles in the public sector. Brady chaired the committee that makes recommendations to ministers and the government about appointments to senior roles in the civil service. Previously, he was commissioner of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) and served on the Remembrance Commission, established under the Good Friday Agreement.

He was chairperson of the World Editors Forum and an advisory board member of the European Journalism Centre. In 2024, Brady was awarded an honorary D.Litt. by the National University of Ireland. He is the author of the Joe Swallow crime novel series, set in nineteenth-century Dublin, and several works of non-fiction. 

Brady said: “People's everyday lives are impacted in very real ways by the shortcomings in the administration of the Irish State and in its politics. Seeing so many areas where we have failed to progress, despite the commitment of those talented people who run the State, it’s clear that it is the system that needs to change and radically so. This book is an attempt to set out the causes of the problems and hopefully offer some solutions to build the Ireland that our children and grandchildren deserve. The Republic is critically in need of a reset.”
